Contacting businesses for affiliate partnerships?

I read a short book from Amazon about affiliate networking and it shared on how you can reach out to lesser known online businesses and start up a contract with them.
Essentially you both agree that for every sale that comes from your site, you pocket a certain percentage. It expresses that more people are open to this than not.
Anyone ever consider it?
